Academics

A top research university in Atlanta, Emory University offers more than eighty undergraduate programs across nine schools, and allows students to perform “some of the most cuttingedge research in disciplines ranging from the humanities to the social sciences.” The emphasis here is on a student’s academic freedom to customize their own curriculum and pursue multiple programs of study, no matter how unusual the combination might be. “Intramural basketball and intro to theater? Sure. History of the human world and advanced mathematics? Go ahead,” says a student. In allowing students the room to create their own experience, Emory is also “constantly testing out new programs that may one day benefit future students” and strengthening the community. Most here are “involved in the real world in some aspect,” whether through an internship during the summer, or an actual job during the year, and students “are encouraged to pursue their interests” both in and out of the classroom. All in all, Emory cultivates an atmosphere of “bold, courageous inquiry facilitated by worldrenowned professors, state-of-the-art facilities, and an omnipresent desire to learn.”

Professors at Emory are “incredibly successful in their fields but believe that you can be too,” and “are willing to invest time and effort” into seeing this come true. All have open office hours, are “very feedback-oriented,” and “respect what students have to say.” There is an emphasis on a collaborative environment here, and the “amazing, smart people who bring their brains to class and help educate us” make sure that this permeates every inch of the classroom. There is a lack of competition on campus, which is “actually really heartening and refreshing because students are being pushed to learn and do well in classes and on their topics of interest.” As one student puts it, “I know that I am graduating with a support system behind me and endless opportunities in front of me.”

Student Body

The diversity within the student body is a huge draw; not only are students “from all over the United States and from around the globe,” but the perspectives represented on this campus are “truly astounding.” Many students come here with friends from high school, and a fair number of students are in the business school or are pre-med (due to the noted Emory Healthcare system). Everyone at Emory is “extremely curious about the world around them” and passionate about both their areas of study as well as their extracurricular involvements. There’s “a niche for literally anything and everything,” and “the mood on campus is overall happy and light-hearted.” The spirit of Emory encompasses “a community of care, embracing diversity, and providing a learning environment conducive to academic success.”

Campus Life

Emory is in the suburbs, but just a scant 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta, and the school’s popular “Experience Shuttles” take students out to various attractions in the city on a weekly basis. Much of life at Emory revolves around extracurriculars, and the opportunities to get involved on campus abound, with “many volunteer, Greek, arts, and sports organizations.” Outside of these activities, many students “hang out at coffee shops on campus, explore the Atlanta area, hike in Emory’s large nature preserve, or go to social events on Greek Row.” Greek life is very prominent here, so “there is always something going on, whether it is an open social event, a philanthropy event, or commitments within your organization.” While many people go to parties or club meetings during the majority of their free time, everyone is perfectly happy to “just chill in the dorm rooms and watch a movie on the free television Emory provides.”
