For those seeking “an excellent education in a beautiful location,” Flagler College is a small comprehensive liberal arts school in Florida that offers a “comfortable atmosphere,” “tons of history and culture,” and “a perfect ratio of professors to student.” The school’s strong education program is a huge draw here, but there are plenty of other strong programs in Flagler’s 74 available majors. Hard workers get noticed, and there are plenty of opportunities to excel outside of the classroom, which “has been the most valuable aspect,” according to one student.

The faculty here is “extremely enthusiastic about their jobs” and “very knowledgeable in their fields,” though “there are a few that I don’t think have real direction,” says a student. Nevertheless, most are “always willing to meet and discuss work outside of the classroom,” and the fact that “it is pretty easy to get to know the professors within your major on a personal basis makes things a lot easier and comfortable.” This close-knit community breeds an environment where every person actively wants “to share experiences and knowledge with the faculty and other students.” Class time is treated as an “intellectual journey,” wherein one main question or discussion topic is introduced, and students explore every aspect of it using the professor as the tour guide. “This system the professors at Flagler College have evokes curiosity from all students, leaving very little room for confusion.”

Aside from the “ample help from teachers,” the “personable” administration is “good at communicating to all students via school email.” The best classes are the ones with eight or so people in them, as “you really lean on each other throughout the semester.”

Student Body

Your typical Flagler student is “easygoing and very laid-back” (“How can you not be with the beach five miles away?” asks a student) as well as “super nice and friendly.” It’s not difficult to fit in at Flagler College, because “there is a crowd for everybody, despite the small size of the student body,” even if this student body as a whole is a bit “homogenous.” All students provide different viewpoints and “seem to be very respectful of others’ views.” There are quite a few surfers and artistic types, and even these groups are “very motivated and ready to broaden their education.”

Campus Life

Life is “pretty chill at Flagler,” where “homework usually isn’t too bad most of the time.” As far as making friends, this “relaxed,” happy lot has no problems. “Attend a few of the many social activities that Flagler College offers. It’s really easy to make friends there!” suggests one student. On the first Friday of the month, all the art galleries “throw their doors wide open and serve treats,” and the “casual and quaint” tourist-centric town of St. Augustine “is an awesome place to spend your time, walking around, going out to eat, and doing a little bit of shopping.” Campus activities tend to “die around 7:00 p.m.,” and many students tend to live nearby off campus.

Sunny days mean “the pool and West lawn are the places to be,” and on weekends, “many times we drive to Jacksonville and go out at night there.” Biking, beach volleyball, and walking along the sand dunes are just some of the beachy pastimes here, where “the beach mentality triumphs, including surfer culture.” The campus itself “is beautiful, we sometimes even compare it to Hogwarts,” says a student.
