Academics
“Academics and school spirit are [the] specialties” of Indiana University Bloomington as it creates well-rounded students who will be successful in and after college. This large state school offers excellent financial aid and numerous opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students across all departments to conduct research, adding to “the perfect combination of excellent undergraduate teaching, Division I athletic teams backed by a passionate sense of school spirit, and a lively social scene.” In short, it’s an academically challenging institution with “rigorous and competitive” classes that also has a “fun collegiate environment.”
Students credit the “many excellent professors” who “really care about what they do” for this, noting that they both “bring their subjects to life” and “clearly want what’s best for their students.” Students also point to the individualized attention: “the knowledge to be successful in our futures through great faculty, facilities, and tradition.” The “worldrenowned business program” and the education and media schools are standouts here, but students say that all of the “school systems are great and easy to access,” which makes “communicating with students/professors easy.” Even with 50,000 people on campus, the administration gives student groups “much freedom of planning,” and this warm environment allows students to “collaborate academically and non-academically as one community.” This autonomy grants students the chance to explore “anything we want, whenever, but [find] the key thing we’ll love through many opportunities and great programs.”
Student Body
With such a large student body, “You are destined to find someone who you ‘click’ with.” “It’s unheard of that a student won’t be able to fit in somewhere,” says one. Typical is hard to nail down with tens of thousands of people, but many here are “very respectful of one another and ready to help out a fellow Hoosier” and “very lively and fun,” and each student manages to have “an equal balance of school and social life.” International students (often attracted by the business and music schools) are “accepted and encouraged to attend IU.” Most students can be called “hard workers who also know how to have fun on the weekends.”
Campus Life
This “best-kept secret of the Midwest” is located in “the vibrant city of Bloomington,” where “the restaurants off campus are amazing,” with “many options to choose from.” During the week, people “work really hard,” and the campus is very active, with “a good number of students working out or running.” There is “always something going on and something to do on campus that will fit the need of any student.” Weekends generally start on Thursday night and go through Saturday night, when “house parties are popular,” and the Greek system, although it only encompasses roughly 20 percent of the campus, “provides a strong social scene.” The legendary IU basketball team is “starting to really rebuild its legacy,” and attending games is common. There are also “free movies at the Union on weekends,” and just “a very fun social scene” in general. Looking around the “beautiful” campus,” you can see people jogging or biking, and if the weather’s really nice, you can find people “lying outside on the grass and on benches snoozing.”
