Academics
Simmons College is the only HBCU in Louisville, offering nearly two hundred students a 9-to-1 student to faculty ratio and the opportunity to build critical thinking, writing, and research skills, no matter their choice of major. The school is an institution of biblical higher education, and trains students to become productive members of society, offering a Black-centric curriculum with options for five different bachelor’s degrees, including Music Performance, Religious Studies, and Business Entrepreneurship. The Cross-Cultural Communication major offers courses in interpersonal, intercultural, and mass communication, as well as other liberal arts. The school also recently received a half a million dollar donation from JP Morgan Chase to integrate data science in the curriculum and help address the diversity gap in the field.
Career
The Annual Simmons College Athletics Game Day sees the Falcons play four home basketball games all in one day, and the Marching Falcons band is there to back them up, as well as to perform across the campus's various parades: the African American Heritage Parade, the Kentucky Derby Festival Pegasus Parade, and the University of Louisville Homecoming Parade. The Satin Rhythm Dancers also perform across the campus and state. Housing is available through nearby Spalding University, and food and necessities are provided to students via donations from the caring Simmons community.
Culture
The Office of Career Development helps students prepare their resumes, conduct mock interviews, and get access to career assessments tools, coaching, and advising. Notable alumni include Artishia Gilbert (the first African American woman physician in Kentucky), architect Samuel Plato, and civil rights activist Arenia Mallory.
