Academics
Students are drawn to Texas State University based on the quality and opportunity of its many offerings, in particular the “very strong STEM program,” the “top of the line” education program, and for those studying chemistry, biology, and human health, “exceptional” research programs. Faculty are also admired on a personal level as they’re “not only skilled, but care deeply about their students’ success.” One student enthuses: “I can’t emphasize how much I love my professors and coursework. Honestly, school has felt like a hobby these past years that I have thoroughly enjoyed.” Given that Texas State caters to over 33,000 undergraduates and offers more than 200 degree programs, students admit that there are a number of large-class lectures. But the general high satisfaction of students speaks to the quality of classes, and the “wonderful professors that ignite [their] academic passions.” There’s talk of a science course that had students “playing with Play-Doh to learn structures of meiosis” and taking a “New York fashion trip to learn about popular businesses.” Marketing students enthusiastically speak of the actual campaigns they had to put together for class: “We actually demonstrated our knowledge when we implemented it in our project.” As one student puts it: “I have loved all of my professors so far, they really are passionate about their work and their research, and they are also wonderful people to talk to. My overall experience has been amazing.”
Student Body
“The community of peers I have built at Texas State University is something I have always dreamed of,” confides one senior. That’s a common refrain, given there are over 350 student groups to choose from: “I am involved with TXST Trainwreck (ultimate frisbee) which has let me meet my closest friends on campus and future roommates!” Academically, “students at Texas State actively seek support through one another during class and outside.” Students describe their peers as “knowledgeable and passionate for their studies,” and given the school’s demographics, are appreciative of the “strong female presence overall.”
With a majority of students hailing originally from the Lone Star State, the vibe on campus is “very homey and welcoming.” But don’t be fooled, as “Texas State is a really diverse school in many aspects (race, national origin, gender/sexuality, etc.).” Moreover, “the curriculum is oriented toward inclusivity.” The result, say students, is “a welcoming environment where the student body feels that they can be their true selves here without any judgment.” All in all, “there’s a place for everyone here.”
Campus Life
Texas State is an “absolutely beautiful” campus that is “surrounded by trees and wildlife” and marked by the “gorgeous river that runs through it.” It’s no surprise that river-based activities such as tubing, kayaking, and “the moonlight paddle board” are extremely popular. It’s also fitting that students also make the most of opportunities to preserve that beauty “in the community, helping to conserve the San Marcos river and organize clean ups for the area.” Other “outdoor opportunities,” such as hiking, camping, or hanging out nearby Sewell Park, are favorite ways for Bobcats to “ease their worries.” As one fourth-year student puts it, “you won’t be bored.” Some undergraduates “come to Texas State thinking it’s party hard, which it can be and is, but you also have to work hard.” It’s an all-in sort of attitude, one that’s best evoked by sports, shows, and Greek life: “I believe my school’s spirit is our biggest trait.”
